Domain

A domain is the www-thing you type into the browser’s*) address bar to go to a website. A domain is essential for a website to function, as without an address, visitors cannot find their way.

If you want to delve deeper into the meaning of the word, you can read this Wikipedia article.

Choosing a Domain

When selecting a domain, you should consider how easily you can say it to another person and whether it will be memorable. If you have to say “underscore,” “dash,” or “without umlauts,” or spell it out letter by letter, it might be worth considering a different string.

The domain does not have to be the same as the company name; it can be any easily memorable and recognizable word or combination of words.

For example, I can mention one of my own domains. I started my business in 2017 under the name Argilla Consulting and acquired the domain argilla.fi for it. The domain was used for both the website and my email address.

However, experience showed that Argilla is:

a) Difficult to pronounce correctly
b) Hard to remember

There was nothing in the name that created an association between the name and my business. This is why I decided to get another domain for creating websites and chose a name that better described the field. Sivutaikuri is much easier to remember than Argilla, don’t you think? Well, it is for Finns, believe me! Sivutaikuri translates to Web wizard or Site magician and there’s actually a pun in Finnish because “sivu” has many meanings such as page, side and sideline.

Email Addresses

A domain can and should be used as the suffix for email addresses. A company’s own domain gives credibility and looks more professional than, for example, a popular Gmail address. Web hosting packages usually include several email boxes, and various email services are also available separately from service providers. You can still use your old address and/or forward messages to your desired mailbox.

Where to Get a Domain?

A domain can be obtained from the same place as web hosting, for example. It is usually easiest if both services are from the same provider, but it is not necessary. Using the domain’s DNS records, traffic can be directed so that you can have your website in one place, email services in another, and domain management in a third. If you already have a domain, we can discuss together whether there is a need to transfer or change it.

 * A browser could be, for example, “Google” (Chrome), Edge, Safari, or Mozilla Firefox. It is the tool you use to go online. If your browser is Explorer, I recommend switching to one of the above quickly!

Sivutaikuri's Tip

I usually recommend Zoner’s services to my clients. With Zoner, you can get a domain, web hosting, and email boxes all at once, along with professional customer service.
